If you are on Google’s Blogger platform, no doubt you have already seen this policy change about adult content:
Starting March 23, 2015, you won’t be able to publicly share images and video that are sexually explicit or show graphic nudity on Blogger.

Obviously this is huge for sex bloggers who share any kind of photos.
I know the first instinct is to get off Blogger and go somewhere else. First port of call would be, I guess, the free WordPress.com platform.
But please be aware that WordPress.com doesn’t allow ‘pornographic content’, and while you may be on there forever without a problem, they DO have blitzes at times where they simply suspend blogs that they feel violates their policy. I wrote about this in 2013: one minute the blog is there, the next it’s inaccessible, and I know it’s really difficult to get it ‘unsuspended’ once they’ve locked it down.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this policy change by Blogger triggers a crackdown on ‘pornographic’ blogs by WordPress.com because heaven knows they don’t want to be known as ‘the porn platform’! *clutches pearls*
Self hosting gets around this issue entirely, but it costs money.
I know there are other platforms around that are free and I assume some of them have no concerns about sexual content, but I don’t know enough about any of them to recommend one.
If you have any suggestions that are a) free and b) accepting of explicit content, please let us know in the comments.
In the meantime, if you are on those platforms, please backup and/or export your content just in case.

I guess I’ll be self hosting a bit sooner than I thought. We had planned on moving from WordPress anyway but I’ve been dragging my feet being lazy. I know too many bloggers that are going to be affected by this and it sucks!

I have never considered Tumblr a platform for blogging (unless it’s primarily pictures of course).
To me, it doesn’t lend itself well to long form writing for quite a few reasons (e.g. interacting with readers is really hard, and if you enjoy that, it’s a big limitation).
That’s personal taste though: I think there ARE some writers who use Tumblr, so it’s definitely worth a look.

Do you think a combination of using both Blogger and a Tumblr site could work. Push the photos and what they consider objectionable stuff over to Tumblr but leave the power of the Blogger platform for the writing and comments and just post links for those who want to view the material. Just a thought. Might need to generate some “How to” type documents to help everyone.

I think it’s certainly doable, yes. Do I think it will work for most writers OR for readers? No.
I think most writers who use images are creating a holistic experience with them. The image and writing are complementary, and you lose that if you split them up.
From the reader side, I don’t know about you, but I’m a lazy reader. I have more than 50 blogs in my feed reader and I would never click through to see images.

So, are text only blogs okay? I thought it was only pictures that were the problem but I’m getting the impression that I might have problems too despite having no photos?

The truth is that I don’t think anyone’s sex blogs are safe on Blogger or WordPress (or any platform that has ‘no porno’ type rules), but the focus IS on images and video, so you’re safer than many others.
I jumped from Blogger because it seemed to me that their blitzes were targetting random sex blogs for reasons that were unclear to me and they suspend first with no warning, and put the onus on the user to fight the decision later. I didn’t go to WordPress.com for the same reason. I also don’t like the idea that someone can report me for unacceptable content (because ‘BDSM! Violence!’ etc). I just didn’t feel like my content was safe.
So, in short: It’s a bit of a crap shoot. Chances are you’re safe. I think backing up regularly and hoping for the best is a perfectly valid strategy.
