Virtual book tour: Sex nerds unite

This is the first time I have been involved in a virtual book tour (who knew there was such a thing?!). Essentially it’s like a real life book tour, but the book ‘tours’ blogs for a month. Bloggers read the book and write a piece about it.

So, I’m delighted to be part of the Best Sex Writing 2012 virtual book tour.

Firstly, my sweet hearted perves, I have to tell you up-front that this is *not* a porn or erotica book.

Are you still here?

Okay, good.

This is an anthology of wide ranging non-fiction topics and personal essays from the serious (slut walks addressing sexual violence against women) to media criticism (New York Times and Newsweek articles are examined for their handling of sex-related crime reporting) to personal revelations about sexuality (dating with an STD). A book for ‘sex nerds’. Go and take a look at the table of contents for a full list of the stories in this anthology.

I love hearing people’s personal stories the best, especially when they are delivered with brutal honesty.

Hugo Schwyzer writes a revealing piece called “I want you to want me” about wanting to be sexually desired, and it resonated with me in echoing my writing previously on men as sex objects. Schwyzer observes that:

… I came to see that our cultural myths about desire hurt everyone. We shame women for wanting, and we shame men for wanting to be wanted.

By putting the focus on managing male desire, women are taught to ignore or suppress their own desires. That’s a loss for women, and it’s a loss for men.

Ugh! Yes!!

I also enjoyed very much the wit and humour of an essay entitled “Adrian’s Penis: Care and Handling” by Adrian Colesberry where he talks in detail about his cock, handling of his cock and issues with his cock in his sexual relationships.

A typical first time with Adrian Colesberry plays out like a
physical comedy routine where every time the thirsty heroine
bends down to the water fountain, the stream retreats to a dribble.
He’ll go down on you until he gets his erection, but he’ll lose it as
soon as he reaches for the condom. If you’re kind enough, you’ll
get him hard again in your hand or mouth, but right when he
tears open the condom, he’ll go all floppy again.

*laugh* Brutally honest and hilarious.

The anthology has some really interesting essays in it. If you think you might be a sex nerd, you can go and take a peek at the book on Amazon where they have the preview feature that allows you to read a little to see if it’s something you might be interested in.

  1. If Adrian is going to talk about his cock in the third person he better have a name for that hog. Gregory Allen’s cock is called “Camel Wide.” Why? Because when a woman has it in her mouth the relative larger size compared to other cocks is like the feeling of smoking a camel wide instead of a regular cigarette. NOT because Gregory Allen’s cock is similar in size to a cigarette. People often make that mistake. It’s a relative size thing! It’s a very confusing nickname. I’m thinking of changing it.

*laugh* Hilarious! And you should absolutely NOT change it! I hear Camel Wides are HUGE, relatively speaking…

    2. Yes OK but I was confused when I first saw you Gregory Allen. I did ask then. Are you a boy or girl? You didn’t say. Did I annoy you?

      1. I suspect I will not be the only one who is completely baffled by your comment and questions, Satan.

But for the record, GregoryAllen is a boy, with a Camel Wide cock, apparently.

        1. Yeah, I wasn’t sure what to make of this, either. Thanks for the help.

“But for the record, GregoryAllen is a boy”

I’ve actually been a man for about twenty years, but since I have a little submissive crush on Ferns I don’t mind much her referring to me as “boy.”

“with a Camel Wide cock, apparently.”

No! My cock is much bigger than that. It’s actually bigger than most so it’s like a camel wide compared to a regular cigarette. It’s a relative size thing! Oh, never mind. I’m calling it something else from now on. This nickname is not working.

        2. “since I have a little submissive crush on Ferns I don’t mind much her referring to me as “boy.””

*smile* I am resisting petting you sweetly… *pet pet*.

“My cock is much bigger than that. It’s actually bigger than most so it’s like a camel wide compared to a regular cigarette.”

*nod* Camel Wide, I get it. Like a cigarette. Only bigger… but not much bigger… like a big cigarette… It’s perfectly clear…

          Ferns

        3. All of your comments seem clear to me Gregory Allen.

It was just when I was not sure if you were male or female. Why didn’t you say?

I am sorry, completely baffled Ferns (and possibly completely baffled other readers).

On a much earlier post I was not sure if Gregory was male or female. He was male. I got that. Yes and the fact that he has a cock is a giveaway too. You are so funny. I mean and thank you Ferns for your clarification on that point.

          Satan

        4. Sorry, Satan, I must have missed that post. That picture of a woman’s face is the cover of one of my books. I don’t have an actual photo up, but yeah, I’m male.

“Camel Wide, I get it. Like a cigarette. Only bigger… but not much bigger… like a big cigarette… It’s perfectly clear…”

This is all wrong, Ferns, but it did make me belly laugh, so I love it!

        5. That is OK Gregory. I am also sorry. I was confused by what I thought was the baby doll picture of you with the full natural breasts.

Then I got a bit more confused as to whether you were insulted because I was confused.

What with camel toe cigarettes. It’s been a confusing time.

I need to go and lie down now.

  2. Hmm.
The book looked interesting but then I see that Amanda Marcotte has an essay and Hugo Schwyzer has an essay. As someone who has been unfortunately reading those two for over nearly 8 years, that doesn’t bode well. Neither Hugo nor Amanda can look at at a sexual problem without finding men to blame for it, and neither of them is really about changing the dating script to require more initiation by women – which, would be fine by me as I don’t believe most women are “wired” to be sexually aggressive though I believe they could learn to communicate better – which is problematic when contrasted to some of the other stances they take on these types of issues. Basically, men should change, women shouldn’t according to them.

You may also be interested to know that in response to my confronting her at the Good Men Project website with her misbehavior (to say the least!) about the Duke Lacrosse false rape case, Amanda Marcotte called me a “creep”. I’m rather proud of that.

    1. Interesting, but despite your history with him, Schwartz’ essay was one I very much agreed with (see extract in my post), and I didn’t see any man-blaming in it.

Since I don’t have any prior knowledge of either of those writers, I read their pieces as-is and didn’t register the bias to the extent of feeling miffed.

I’m not spruiking the book, so I’m not interested in making a case for it. It seems sensible that if you have issues with two of the authors, it’s probably not a book that you are likely to be keen to read.

  3. Oh, that’s fine Mistress Ferns.
Until his recent “excommunication” from many feminist websites (he wrote about a time he was depressed and attempted to take both his own and a girlfriends life) Hugo Schwyzer was probably one ( I can think of maybe 5 more prominent) of the more prominent male feminists in the USA. He also helped organize some of the “Slut Walks” over the past two years before the current brouhaha hit him.

Amanda Marcotte, alas, is one of the more prominent (she might almost BE the spokeswoman as she appears everywhere)3rd wave female feminists in the USA. I find her purported “sex positivity” a sham, (for reasons I won’t go into here)and her main ability seems to be as the designated demagogue or “bad cop” for feminism, sort of an “Ann Coulter” of the left, with a dash of male hatred thrown in. I actually read her Pandagon blog for a few months consistently back in 2005. She also was the official blogger for the John Edwards campaign back in 2006 until some of her past comments and her abuse of the Duke Lacrosse team caught up to her.

Since you had written about sex before I put two and two together and immediately assumed you were more familiar with those two than perhaps you were. For all I knew, you have a picture of Amanda Marcotte beneath your pillow with the caption “bestest friends” and carried on a private affair with Hugo (in between his marriage to his current wife) so I felt it was fair to let you know that I was called a creep by Amanda.

I have no personal bad history with Hugo, (and my only personal history with Amanda is the creep comment on a public blog) and once in awhile I actually agree with something he says so maybe I was hasty in rejecting the book merely based on his presence. But usually when those two go someplace together, I’ve found that some place has an agenda and I was wondering just what that book might be selling.
