… and then, it rained…

Flood.

Almost three weeks after Queensland’s flood crisis began, an unprecedented 80 per cent of the state was yesterday declared a disaster zone…

Most of my family and friends are (so far) largely unaffected though a couple have evacuated their homes. I am overseas at the moment, but keeping a close eye on what is going on.

We are expecting the worst on Thursday with a very high tide and a release of water from an overflowing dam upstream which will send a lot of additional water down the already flooded river.

They are expecting 30 suburbs in Brisbane to be flooded in the next couple of days, but we are luckier than many smaller towns out West and up North which have all but been evacuated due to floods.

And still… some folks are managing to keep their sense of humour:

Gotta love Aussies, right?

  2. If it makes you feel any better, we're suppose to get a big storm of doom and death and destruction that will probably just end up being some wind and snow like every other day in Canada, so at least you're sort of not alone.

Though if we do end up getting buried in snow I'll make sure to write in big bold letters “I'm suffocating! Halp!” on my roof.

  3. And of course the weather and water is also over the border in Northern NSW…. took us three days to do a 10 hour drive earlier this week, we were stranded in Glen Innis when the highways were closed north and east.

    Hang in there!

I will look out for your house on the news! Seriously though, I hope the storm didn't eventuate.

  5. Miss Ferns! You should have replied to my email last night. You are very naughty indeed!

Ahh, but I'm glad to see that you're all right. Holy cow, though . . . Isn't it all scary? I expect to see the Four Horsemen any time now! I shall be wishing for dryness and more dryness . . . .

*nod nod* True, the 3 day trip sounds horrible!

The waters are receding in Brisbane now, and the cleanup is starting, but the flooding is moving south and west. I see also that parts of Victoria are now getting floods.

    I am, it's true… and your point would be…?

“Ahh, but I'm glad to see that you're all right.”

Yes, I am fine, thank you for your furrowed brow, and yes it is pretty scary for those in the firing line, and will be difficult in the coming weeks as they try to clean it up and start over.

I don't know what eventuate means and I'm not going to look it up so instead, I'll assume it means didn't happen in which case it did not. Just like every other storm of doom and death and destruction everyone freaks out about here it turned out to just be some snow, there wasn't even any wind! And it all melted the next day! *shakes head*
